Daisy was the first recipient. Daisy was a pure bred 5 month old yellow lab that the owners brought to the vet to be pts because she had been hit by a car and they didn’t want to pay for the surgery to repair it. They felt she would just get hit again. The vet contacted LOLIN who rescued the dog and started her on pain meds and paid for her surgery that amounted to $1800 initially. They contacted H E A R T to request assistance with the treatment bill. A total of $427 for her care was given to LOLIN. Daisy recuperated well from her surgery and was adopted by a great family with 3 teenagers and another rescue pet in Dec. www.lolin.org

Maddie was the second recipient. Maddie was a 5 month old shepherd-lab mix who was pulled from a high kill shelter where she had been picked up after being hit by a car and left to die. ARK rescued her and paid to have her fractured leg pinned and her fractured pelvis attended to. She was adopted in January. Auggie was a 10 year old weimaraner who had spent his whole life chained outside when rescue was alerted he was dying. His owner had given him contaminated deer carcass and he had become very ill, dehydrated, with a severe bacterial infection and compacted mass in his intestines. Buckshot was found in both legs and his back. Louisville Weimaraner Rescue took him to the hospital where bloodwork, x-rays, IV’s and antibiotics were started. Auggie is recuperating with no problems in a foster home. He is loving the inside home luxuries he never had, and the love he is receiving while at his forever home. Cooper is a 2 year old poodle-pyrenees mix who was relinquished by his owners to a shelter. He had never received any vaccinations and developed Parvo. Cooper was a very sick boy with a matted, filthy coat who was rescued by Indy Great Pyrenees Rescue. Cooper was nursed back to health through loving care and lots of medicines. He was given all his vaccinations and groomed and just recently was adopted to a wonderful mom around Easter. Rocco is a beautiful pure bred 8 month old chocolate lab puppy whose owner turned him over to the shelter because they did not want him anymore. Relinquished pets wee given 24 hours and then pts. Luckily, Love of Lab Rescue saved him and he was fostered while recuperating from his manly surgery and waiting for his forever home. Rocco was a sweetheart who was housebroken, laid back, playful, and knows commands. He deserved a chance. HEART helped assist with payment for his release and microchip expense. Buddy is a vibrant 2 year old lab. HEART calls him their poster dog as he exemplifies what HEART is trying to do. Buddy was going to be put to sleep at the shelter because he was deemed non-adoptable. He had heartworms because his owners never gave him preventative meds. Luckily, Love of Lab Rescue saved him and he has undergone treatment and he is now, in his forever home. HEART donated $200 to assist with Buddy’s treatment. www.lolin.org


Meet Darius and Chrissy. These beautiful Great Pyrenees pups, along with their 4 siblings, were turned into the shelter by a breeder who couldn’t sell them. While at the shelter they developed pneumonia and became very ill. IGPR rescued them and took them to the vet where they were hospitalized, given X-rays, IV’s and medicine. They are recovering in foster homes. HEART donated $406 to assist with treatment costs.
An update: Darius, Chrissy and all the pups have been placed in their new forever homes!

Meet Jazz – She is a four year old weim rescued from a backyard breeder where she was chained to concrete. Her sole purpose was to deliver puppies. She had no name or human contact. With the last delivery, her female organs were outside of her and they became infected. She had broken her front incisors trying to break loose. Animal control took her away and contacted Louisville Weim Rescue. She has gone through a $600 reconstructive surgery and is a happy girl. HEART donated $300 from the proceeds of this jar to assist with her care. She is loving the attention and care at her forever home.

Meet Miller, a nine-month chocolate lab puppy who had been lying in pain at an animal shelter for one week with a fractured pelvis and leg. Miller had not been given any pain medications until a Good Samaritan rescued him from the shelter and contacted Love of Lab Rescue (LOLIN). Despite his pain, Miller is gentle and full of love. He wants to please everyone despite his fracture. He is scheduled for surgery with pins and plates that costs over $2,000. Miller has a foster home lined up through Love of Lab, who is raising money for his surgery. The Good Samaritan and LOLIN felt Miller deserved a second chance to live a pain-free life. HEART donated $500 from the proceeds of this candy jar to assist with Miller’s medical bills. Miller’s surgery was a success. On June 20th, Miller, soon to be called Indiana, went home with his forever family. They are big dog people and have already scheduled an appointment to see what therapy must be pursued for him. They emailed LOLIN the first day. They are very excited to have Indiana join their family.


Trixie is a delightful 8yo girl who had a bad experience with surgery to remove a very large sebaceous cyst and to be spayed. Complications from her age and weight set in after surgery and a trip to the Airport Emergency Animal Hospital, 3 units of blood, and repeat surgery were needed to save her life. She survived and is doing very well. HEART will be donating $300 to assist with the $2300 medical bill. Trixie was adopted into her forever home by a loving veterinarian and his wife, she also has a new found appreciation for boat rides on Lake Michigan!

Lauren is a young terrier-mix whom was heartworm positive. ARK rescued her from the shelter and soon found out that she was also pregnant. ARK has been able to give her a good foster home with plenty of love and attention. She has had the pups and they are being taken care of by ARK workers. HEART will be donating $250 to assist with the treatment and $100 for shots for the pups. The pups have been adopted into their forever homes. I am Lucy-a boxer puppy, less than a year old that was found running the streets with another boxer, without tags or I.D. I was emaciated, dehydrated, full of worms and fleas, and had recently given birth. I was taken to a private rescue that helps abused, stray dogs and required immediate medical attention. The vet felt I had become pregnant with my first heat. I was started on antibiotics, and anti-worm medicine that made me very ill. I was given medication to stop the lactating and treated me for fleas. I am presently recuperating at my foster home and loving the attention. I am a little uncertain that this good thing will end so I whimper when she leaves. I will need to be spayed after I get stronger. HEART donated $441 from the candy proceeds to help pay for the medical bill. Lucy has been adopted and is making a nice transition into her forever home!


This is Harley - she is a 7 month old Blue Weimaraner pup who was lying in limbo for a life or death decision. She was hit by a car and his owners would not pay for the surgical repair of her broken pelvis. Her owners relinquished her to be put to sleep. Harley is a beautiful Weimaraner, full of love despite her pain. Luckily, the veterinarian contacted Louisville Weimaraner Rescue. Harley has a foster home lined up through the rescue and they are presently trying to raise funds for her $4000 repair. The veterinarian hospital is donating half the cost. The surgery has already been scheduled. HEART is donating $500 from the proceeds the candy jars to assist with Harley’s medical bills. We want to give Harley a second chance to live a pain-free life.
A pleasant update, Harley has fully recovered and has been adopted into her forever home!


Meet Lady - She was abandoned by her owner and left tied up outside in the extreme heat among the over grown weeds. When Dogs Deserve Better volunteers, came to her aid she was found to be extremely ill. Lady was rushed to the veterinarian hospital where she was diagnosed with severe Parvo. The rescue organization is asking for assistance to pay for the mounting medical bill, which is almost $2000. HEART is donating $300 from the candy jar proceeds to assist with Lady’s care. An update, Lady is fully healed! She is still waiting for a loving forever home though.

Charlie, age 4 years, Molly age 2.5 years, and Noah 11 months were left abandoned for a month in the house without food or water. When the rescue arrived, they were all close to death. Sadly, Charlie could not tolerate the change in nourishment and died from bloat. Molly is doing well on her graduated diet and living in a foster home as she slowly recovers. Noah has had a rough life. He was born with several deformities but adjusted. However, they found out that he also had a recent fracture of his 2nd and 3rd vertebrae. Because of the location, he should have been paralyzed. A specialist was contacted to see if the spine could be stabilized since it had already started healing improperly. HEART is donating $500 from the proceeds of our candy jars and fundraisers to assist with his medical care so that Noah can function near normal and have a chance at a forever home. Meet Savannah, a 3 yo Golden rescued by GRRACE from Animal Control. She was seriously overweight and in poor condition despite her youth. She developed pancreatitis, a life-threatening illness, which required extensive medical care to save her. Savannah pulled through and is now in a loving “forever home”. HEART donated $420 from the candy jar proceeds to assist with her medical bills.


Cinderella-she is a black lab who was dumped by the side of the road, along with her newborn puppies that were in a garbage bag. When a Good Samaritan took her to the Putnam County Animal Shelter, she was found to be cold, weak and heartworm positive. Her pups were dead. Because of her heartworms, Cinderella was deemed unadoptable and was destined to be put to sleep. The shelter staff felt she deserved a second chance and pleaded for help from the rescues. LOLIN has taken her under foster care and H.E.A.R.T. is assisting with her heartworm treatment by donating $170 of the proceeds from the candy jars to help. Cinderella is a loving dog that we are happy to hear that she has moved on to her forever home!


Meet Candy-a sweet Beagle/Bassett mix (2-3 yrs old) who was trying to find warmth and food on the streets. She was brought to the Putnam County Humane Society where she was found to have heartworms. This made her deemed “unadoptable” so the Putnam Humane Society made pleas to help her out. HEART stepped in to pay for her complete heartworm treatment at $150. The proceeds from our candy jars allowed this to happen. Candy is so well behaved, friendly and loves attention. She is lucky for her second chance.

Meet Athena-a starved 2-3 yo Great Dane who was found collapsed on someone’s porch. She had been attacked by coyotes and had multiple infected wounds. The vet felt she had got lost and after several weeks without food, was unable to defend herself. She had no microchip or tags. Athena weighs only 50 pounds and is being watched and fed carefully to prevent bloat. Clay County Animal Rescue is fostering her while she makes the slow recovery back to health and requested sponsors to help with the medical bills, vitamins and food. H.E.A.R.T. is donating $250 to assist with her care from the proceeds of our candy jars.
Athena has found her forever home and now has two siblings whom are also Great Danes!
Meet Hazel-a young bulldog that was surrendered in horrid condition. Hazel has Demodex Mange that was so severe she had lost most of her hair and her tail needed amputated. IBDR asked for assistance with the $788 bill. HEART donated $250 from the proceeds of our jars.

Meet Willow-a 2 yr English bulldog who was found wandering the streets this cold January. It was the third time she had been picked up by animal control in poor shape for various neglect. Luckily, IBDR was contacted and she is now with a foster family. She was found to need bilateral cherry eye surgery that is common in this breed but can lead to blindness, if unattended. Willow has such a sweet temperament, that H.E.A.R.T. wanted to assist IBDR so that this time she got the care and love she deserves. H.E.A.R.T. donated $300 from the candy proceeds to assist with her $838 eye surgery while she recoups.

Meet Boomer, saved from a shelter, and Baby Jane, one of the five Bullies rescued from a puppy mill. They are some of the beautiful bullies needing medical help. Indiana Bulldog Rescue was pleading for help to treat these dogs that have been saved from a bleak future but need medical attention for various things like heartworms, eye infections, ripped sutures, a hernia and a heart murmur. Meet Lazarus- an emaciated, anemic pug who had been on the streets too long! He had given up hope. Animal control was called to pick up a dead dog and when they arrived, he wagged his tail for help. The Kentucky Pug rescue took him into foster care and he received medicine, food and love. H.E.A.R.T. donated $250 to assist with his recovery from the proceeds of our candy jars.

Meet Cyrus-a beautiful 2-3 yr black lab that was trying to survive on the streets. Cyrus was deemed unadoptable because he was heartworm positive and was to be put to sleep. The Putnam County Humane Society pleaded for help because he had a vibrant personality, playful and loved everyone. Luckily, H.E.A.R.T. stepped in an offered to pay the $150 bill to treat Cyrus while he waits at a foster home for a forever home. Meet Stevie, a beautiful 2 yr old female Hungarian Vizsla-lab who was one of the rescued Nola oil dogs that was found as a stray with positive heartworms. Mended Hearts Indy has taken her in and was asking for assistance to pay for her heartworm treatment. HEART is donating $125 from the candy proceeds to help complete her treatment. Roxy is a 7 month old black lab who was hit by a car and left at the side of the road. A good samaratian picked her up and brought her into the ER, where it was discovered that she had a broken leg, fractured scapula, and very bruised up with road rash. The cost of her surgery was approximately $2200.00. When found, she was not wearing a collar, or microchipped, and was infested with fleas. Meet Goldie-a young shepherd mix who along with 3 other dogs, 2 pot bellied pigs and 1 miniature pony, were abandoned when the house was foreclosed. Left at the house chained without food, water or shelter, Lil Bit of Heaven was contacted by concerned neighbors. Golden was emaciated, pregnant and heartworm positive. Meet Charlie-a 3 yo cocker spaniel left chained without shelter, hair matted to the ground, flea invested and heartworm positive. The owners decided they did not want him and were going to have him pts. An in-law took the poor dog and begged Lil Bit of Heaven Rescue to take the pitiful dog despite having over 125 unwanted dogs at the rescue. He was immediately taken to the vet, shaved and given proper care. H.E.A.R.T. is paying the $175 for heartworm treatment from the proceeds of this candy jar. Meet Orlando-he is now almost 3 months old and has survived being born at the shelter, developing double pneumonia, and being in intensive care for over 8 days. P.A.W.S. rescue has taken him under their care while he has had an uphill battle for recovery. Orlando has a will to live and is slowly returning to being a healthy pup, but the medical bills have mounted. Over $3000 is still owed. Meet Dusty-a 4 yo male weimaraner relinquished to the shelter due to economic reasons. He sat for almost 6 weeks behind bars until H.E.A.R.T. stepped in to pay the $37.95 release fee and microchip, his grooming and transportation to the foster in Richmond for LWR. He is a sweet guy who will be recouping from his manly surgery, while learning basic skills never taught by his first owner. Meet Anela-a very sick little 8-month-old Weimaraner rescued from the shelter with distemper. She weighed in at only 37 pounds, dehydrated, and unable to hold down any food for several days. LWR has taken her to the vet twice for blood work and medications. It was obvious that she had not been taken care of by her owner as her nails were curled. There was no history of any vet visits by the owner for shots, heartworm medicines or flea preventative. Distemper is so easily prevented with the puppy shots. Her irritated skin showed massive infestation of fleas and she had a chronic cough. Update: Anela is becoming a active puppy as her cough is subsiding. This near death experience could have been prevented with normal puppy shots for distemper.

Meet Harley, a 4yo male Golden Retriever who has lived outdoors

Grace is a 7 year-old Golden Retriever who was relinquished to Golden Retriever Rescue and Community Education due to economic reasons. Grace was found to have a uterus infection which required immediate emergency surgery. She was also behind on her annual vaccinations, heartworm preventative and flea care. Luckily, Grace tested negative for heartworms. Grace is healing nicely from her surgery and is a cheerful, playful girl who is looking to find her new forever home.
